Thursday 20th March – walk ***** sunny

We had a very lazy morning, a lie in, exercises and breakfast in the sunshine, watching the piste basher driver collecting piste poles, fences and shinning up the posts to put the drag lift to bed for the season. There were three ladies on the nordique ski piste and some very lost looking walkers! We left about 11.30 and drove back over the mountain on a tiny road above the gorges du Guiers Vif and finally joined a bigger road just before it went into a tunnel through the mountain. When we came out the other side there was a turning to a Roman bridge (Pont Romaine) at St Christophe la Grotte. We went to have a look and it turned out to be a very good move because we had a great walk:) We walked from the car park along a flower lined path (hundreds of primroses and violas) to the roman bridge which was very quaint and high over the gorge gushing that amazing green melting snow water:) After spending a while by the river we walked back towards the car park and then up along the roman road through the gap in the mountain to where the tunnel entrance is. It is a great road with cobbles and steep cliffs either side. On the way back we decided to go up a very high metal staircase which marked the start of a walk. We thought we would only go to the top and look at the view but as usual the top of the staircase wasn’t the view so we followed the path and it went on and on through woodland and very unusual rocks. It turned out to be a prehistoric walk with little plates showing what relics had been found in various places. Eventually we came to a view point which was right above the van! Decided to carry on following the path and hoped it would bring us to the roman bridge which eventually it did:) It was one of our favourite French style scrambling walks and very enjoyable. We had been away from the van for about 3 ½ hours. Had our lunch (at 4pm!) at a picnic table next to the van. Drove to St. Laurent du Pont where we visited the tourist information and bought some stamps for our postcards. Drove back up the gorges to where we skied yesterday and tried to find somewhere to stop just south of that but it wasn’t happening for us and although we travelled through several small ski resorts there wasn’t anywhere to park up. We ended up coming right through the middle of Grenoble and up the other side to Chamrousse 1700 Domaine de l’Arselle a bit earlier than we anticipated. We tried down a likely looking road before we got up to Chamrousse and that ended up being a long detour because we couldn’t turn round! Both knackered and trying to decide why we aimed for chamrousse really when we have been here twice before and know the skiing is going to be too expensive for our new requirements! Still we are here and can park and relax…………..Update on that – there is a Disco with a very loud DJ going on full pelt on the piste!!! Could be a rough night:(
